Just to recall — In continuation with our long term rehab program for the Chennai flood affected, we had discussed with the Ambedkar Nagar community of Adambakkam to start a thrift society so that we can engage with a formal body for all our interventions there.
The three thrift societies of 15 members each have been functioning well for last 4 months. Each member has saved Rs. 200 each per month, for a total of Rs. 800 in each persons saving account. This has created a corpus of Rs. 12k which has doubled to Rs. 24k with Lokalex’s matching grant. The groups have given loans of Rs. 5k each to 4 members engaged in trading fish and selling idlis. Repayment installments have also started.
Besides, from May 1 we are starting children’s activity centre where during holidays they will do extra curricular activities and also be mentored by volunteers over Skype. Malnourished children will be examined by a Doctor and nutrition supplements will be provided to them at the centre.
I invite volunteers who can spend an hour a day with children over Skype or on site and mentor them. No special qualifications needed. Just love and some spare time to express it.
